Day 136 ~ 177 Days of Unexpected Health Project

Gusts of Health

The world is closing in
Did you ever think
That we could be so close, like brothers
The future’s in the air
I can feel it everywhere
Blowing with the wind of change

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dream away
in the wind of change

-Scorpions, Wind of Change

Northern California has felt windier than usual these days. Gusts of whirling air seem to blow through the trees outside my house, as if the branches are knocking on my window, commanding my attention. And like the tap, tap, tapping on my window, today, as I was running over the Golden Gate bridge, surrounded by exquisite beauty and amazing friends, I was blown away by the Unexpected Health we can find…in wind.

The music group, Scorpions, knew early on about the health benefits of wind: the feeling of excitement and anticipation that whirls through all of us when the wind tousles our hair…and our lives; the energy of the dreamers, the future innovators, and the wide-eyed explorers that somehow is shared when the wind blows; and of course, as the song so magically reiterates, wind creates change. But the Unexpected Health that rattles our bones with the wind is that when we are blown around by the gusts, we are reminded about the fluidity of life…and physically experiencing the flow of life is healthy.

As anyone who has ever walked, run, or biked across the Golden Gate bridge knows, it is windy! The absence of wind barriers make it a prime spot for experiencing wind. Today, as I took in the beauty of the bay and the city, I was taken back (literally!) by the strong presence of the wind. It physically moved me. The gusts slowed me down, moved me from side to side, and blew my hair around (the health benefits of extra clips for your hair may be explored one of these days!).

The wind is a perfect metaphor for life. We experience all sorts of gusts in our lives: gusts of happiness, tornadoes of hardship, and windy times of the unknown. We can get blown around in many directions, but no matter which way we end up when the wind stops, it’s a new perspective; it’s a new landscape; it’s a wider lens. So the next time the wind blows, step outside and experience it. Don’t fight to stay in one place, just let it guide you. When we are open to the opportunities in life–the health–there’s no telling where ‘the wind will take us.’ But rest assure you will not stay stuck in the same place. -Until tomorrow, Jaime

The wind of change
Blows straight into the face of time
Like a storm wind that will ring the freedom bell
For peace of mind…
